Shopify app

Your checkout shows what you want.

Pay by invoice only from the second order. No express shipping for bulky goods. A minimum order value, in your own words.

Checkout with shipping and payment selection: express shipping and invoice are hidden by rules

Where Shopify stops

Shopify shows every buyer the same payment and shipping methods, in the same order, under the same names, and accepts every order. Changing that has so far taken Shopify Plus and a developer.

This app needs neither. It's built on Shopify Functions, and those are available to public App Store apps on every plan.

One app, three areas

Each rule says when a payment or shipping method disappears from checkout, is renamed or moves, or when checkout is blocked.

Payment methods

Hide, rename, reorder. Pay by invoice only from the second order, cash on delivery only at home, the preferred method on top.

Shipping methods

Hide express for bulky goods, give “Standard” a clearer name. The cheapest rate stays first.

Switch rules on and off one by one

Switch a seasonal rule off instead of deleting it. Next time it's still there, with all its conditions.

The rule list in Hand-E Checkout Rules: one rule each for payment, shipping and a checkout block, each switched on or off on its own

Checkout blocks

Stop orders below a minimum, with your own message. No Shopify Plus needed.

Eleven conditions, freely combined

Each condition is attached to the one above it with “and” or “or”, line by line. Mixed combinations are read from top to bottom. The same goes for all three areas.

  • Cart value, number of items, shipping countries
  • The customer's previous orders and spend so far
  • Customer logged in, customer tags, time of day
  • Product tag, product title, collection in the cart
Two conditions of a rule, joined with or: cart value at least 300 or a product carrying the tag Hazmat

A minimum order, in your own words

If the cart is below your limit, your message appears at checkout, and the order can't be completed. The buyer can still change the cart. With the same eleven conditions as every other rule.

  • Minimum order value or item limit
  • Only for some countries, products or customers
  • Never blocks while a condition is unknown
A checkout block in Hand-E Checkout Rules: cart value at most 49.99, plus the message your customers read

Checkout always stays usable

If your rules together would hide the last payment or shipping method, the app hides nothing there at all. And a block that can't decide doesn't block.

  • The last payment and shipping method always stays
  • Payment and shipping rules run at checkout, not on the cart page
  • Payment rules don't apply in Shop Pay or Point of Sale
  • The cheapest shipping rate always stays first, as Shopify requires

Pricing

There's a free plan for one rule, and it stays free. Billing runs entirely through Shopify and can be cancelled in your admin. The Standard plan comes with a 14-day free trial.

Common questions about Hand-E Checkout Rules

Do I need Shopify Plus to hide payment or shipping methods?
No. The app is built on Shopify Functions, and those are available to public App Store apps on every plan. Plus is only needed by custom apps that want to use the same API themselves.
Where do the rules apply, and where don't they?
Payment and shipping rules apply at checkout, not on the cart page and not in Point of Sale. Payment rules also don't apply in Shop Pay, with one exception: the gift card field. Checkout blocks apply at checkout, and the buyer can still change the cart freely; they don't apply in Point of Sale either. These are limits of the platform, documented by Shopify.
Can I set a minimum order value?
Yes, with a checkout block: the condition cart value at most 49.99, plus a message like “Orders are possible from $50.” The buyer reads it at checkout, and the order only goes through once the value of the items is above it. Shipping doesn't count.
Why isn't my express shipping rate in first place?
Shopify requires the cheapest shipping rate to come first and be preselected. The app keeps to that: a more expensive rate moves up to second place at most.
Can Apple Pay and Google Pay be renamed?
Hiding yes, renaming and moving no. That is also a limit of the platform, and it applies to Shop Pay as well.
Can I put a surcharge into the name?
You can, but it won't be charged. The app only changes the label. If you enter “Cash on delivery (+$5.90)”, you get exactly that text at checkout and no $5.90 on the bill.
How does the app know whether someone is a repeat customer?
From the order history that Shopify passes to checkout. It only becomes available once the buyer has entered their email address, though. Before that everyone counts as a new customer, and a rule for new customers applies to them too.
What happens if my rules match every payment or shipping method?
Then the app hides nothing there at all. Checkout stays usable. A checkout without a payment or shipping method would be worse than a rule that doesn't apply once.
What happens to my rules if I uninstall the app?
Shopify removes the customizations together with the app. Checkout then shows all payment and shipping methods again as before, and no block applies any more.

Not on the App Store yet

Hand-E Checkout Rules is finished and will be submitted to Shopify for review shortly. As soon as the listing is approved, the install button will be here. Until then, this page describes everything the app can do.
