FAQ
Hand-E Checkout Rules FAQ
Answers on setting up and testing rules. What the app does and costs is on the app page.
Why doesn't my rule apply?
Check these points: is the rule's switch in the list set to Active? Does the name under “Then” match what checkout shows, also in your customers' language? If the rule asks about returning customers, only logged-in customers are recognized; a guest counts as new. Rules only work at checkout, not on the cart page, and payment rules don't apply in Shop Pay. Cart value counts without shipping and taxes. And while the shipping country isn't known yet, renaming and moving don't apply.
Why doesn't my test order count as a previous order?
Shopify doesn't count test orders, neither toward a customer's previous orders nor toward their spend. To test the returning-customer rule, you need a customer account with an order that wasn't a test payment, and the customer has to be logged in at checkout.
Can I switch a rule off without deleting it?
Yes. Each rule has its own switch in the list. Set to “Off”, it no longer applies at checkout but keeps all its conditions. Switching off works on every plan. You delete a rule in the editor under “Delete rule”; this can't be undone.
How many rules can I create?
One on the Free plan, in any of the three areas. With Standard, up to 25 active rules per area, so 25 each for payment methods, shipping methods and checkout blocks.
What happens to my rules if I move from Standard to Free?
Your existing rules keep running at checkout, and you can edit them and switch them off. The Free plan only allows one rule, though: you create a new one only once no other rule exists, and you can switch a rule on only while no other is active.
Can one rule hide several payment methods?
Yes. Below the first row under “Then”, add more with “Add payment method”. Each row has its own name and its own match, “contains” or “is exactly”. When renaming, each row gets its own new name. For shipping methods the button is “Add shipping method”.
What applies when customers pay in another currency?
The app converts the cart into your store's currency with Shopify's rate and then compares it with your amount. If your store uses US dollars, a cart in Canadian dollars only reaches a threshold of 1,000 once it's worth 1,000 US dollars after conversion. If you mean the amount in the customer's currency, pick it under “Currency of the amount”; the condition then only applies to buyers in that currency. The field appears when your store has several currencies.
What happens with digital products that have no shipping address?
Without a shipping address there is no shipping country, and a condition on shipping countries isn't known. A rule that hides then hides when in doubt. Renaming and moving don't apply when in doubt, and a checkout block doesn't block. The last payment method always stays.
What does my customer see when a checkout block applies?
Your message from “What your customers read”, at checkout. The order can't be completed then, but they can still change the cart. Once the condition no longer applies, for example because the items reach the minimum order value, they can order. If two blocks carry the same message, it appears once.
Can I close my whole store with a block that has no condition?
No. A checkout block needs at least one condition, otherwise every checkout would be blocked, and the app won't save it. To close your store for a while, use Shopify's password page.
What data does the app read at checkout?
For the evaluation, Shopify provides it with this information at checkout: cart total, number of items and currency, the shipping country, whether the buyer is logged in, how many orders they have placed and how much they have spent so far, whether they carry customer tags you named, which items carry product tags, collections or title words you named, the shipping methods offered with name and price, and the shop's local time. None of this leaves Shopify, and none of it is stored by us. The app doesn't query name, address, postal code, email address or phone number. Under “Data access” on the App Store, Shopify still lists the store owner's contact details, because every app can read the store's details; the app stores none of it. Details are in the privacy policy.
How do I report a bug?
In the app at the bottom right, with “Report a bug”. Briefly describe what you did and what happened; the page you're on is sent along. An email address for follow-up questions is optional. Questions also reach us through the contact form.
