Where Shopify stops
Shopify can do discounts. But a native volume discount knows exactly one threshold: 10% off from 5 items. If you want to give 15% from 10 items, you need a second discount, and then both compete for the same cart.
These cases used to be handled with Shopify Scripts. Scripts were shut down on June 30, 2026, and a large share of the answers you find online still point to them.

The five discount types
Each one solves a case Shopify doesn't cover natively. All five are included in every plan.
Cart value tiers
Several thresholds for the whole order. From 500, ten percent; from 1,000, fifteen; all in a single discount.
Bundle
Product groups that earn a discount together. One group can be a pure condition: buy A, get B for less.
Gift above cart value
Lands in the cart by itself and is free at checkout. If the cart drops below the threshold, it disappears again.
Bulk codes
Up to 1,000 codes with your own prefix, as a CSV file. Without easily confused characters like 0 and O.
One sentence, one finished suggestion
You write “20% off all snowboards from 3 items”. The assistant finds the products in your store, picks the right discount type and puts the complete suggestion in front of you.
- It creates nothing without you. Product names, thresholds and amounts are in front of you before anything comes into being.
- The discount is created inactive. It then sits in your admin and only applies once you switch it on. A typo costs you no revenue.
- It asks instead of guessing. If a quantity is missing, or if the currency you named doesn't match your store's currency, it asks a follow-up question.
- The AI doesn't write the configuration. It makes the decisions; the technical part is built by tested code.
Check the math before it goes live
The discount form holds a test cart built from your real products. It calculates with the same logic as checkout and says for each line why a discount applies or doesn't.
That's worth more than it sounds: Shopify truncates percentage discounts to the cent instead of rounding. $749.95 at 10% becomes $74.99 per item, not $75.00. The preview calculates the same way.

You'd rather learn what's here now than after installing.
- The gift needs a one-time app embed in your theme. A Shopify Function can't add a cart line on its own.
- The AI assistant is part of the Pro plan. All five discount types can be created by hand on the Starter plan as well.
- A discount from the assistant is created inactive and only applies once you remove the end date in your admin.
- Shopify allows 25 active discount functions per store. That's a limit of the platform, not of the app.

Common questions about Hand-E Discounts
Do I need Shopify Plus for tiered discounts?
No. Hand-E Discounts runs on every Shopify plan. The app uses Shopify Functions, and those are open to all plans. Only the Shopify Scripts that have been shut down were reserved for Plus.
How many quantity thresholds can one discount have?
Any number. They only have to rise strictly: a higher quantity must also give a higher discount, otherwise the form refuses to save.
Do two variants of the same product count together?
That's your decision. There are three counting methods: each cart line on its own, all variants of a product together, or everything in scope together. Shopify natively knows only the last one.
How does Shopify round percentage discounts?
Shopify truncates to the cent, it doesn't round. $749.95 at 10% becomes $74.99 per item, not $75.00. The cart preview in the app calculates the same way, so preview and checkout match to the cent.
How does the gift get into the cart?
Through an app embed in your theme that you activate with one click. A Shopify Function can't add a cart line on its own, so there's no other way technically. The Function then makes the gift free at checkout, and that can't be worked around.
Can a customer buy the gift item as well?
Yes. The app embed recognises the line it created itself and never touches a line the customer put in the cart.
What happens to my discounts if I uninstall the app?
Shopify removes discounts that come from an app together with the app. The discount codes from the bulk generator stay, because they are regular Shopify discounts.
