Multiple quantity breaks in one Shopify discount
In Shopify's discount form you pick one minimum purchase requirement with one value, which means one threshold per discount. For 10% off 5 or more items and 15% off 10 or more, you need two separate automatic discounts natively, or an app that keeps every tier in one discount.

Why one threshold per discount isn't enough
Quantity breaks are a familiar tool in retail: buy more, pay less per item. In Shopify you create an Amount off products discount and set Minimum quantity of items as the minimum purchase requirement. The form takes one value there. One discount is one tier.
Shopify says so openly in its own help center: for more advanced discount solutions such as tiered discounts, it points to apps from the Shopify App Store and, for stores on Shopify Plus, to Checkout Blocks. If you want three tiers, you build three discounts or get an app.
Hand-E Discounts solves this with the Volume tiers discount type: as many thresholds as you like, strictly ascending, in one discount. Each tier uses a percentage or a fixed amount, and you decide whether quantities are counted per cart line, per product or across everything in scope.
| Shopify native | With Hand-E Discounts | |
|---|---|---|
| Thresholds per discount | one minimum quantity | as many as you like, strictly ascending |
| Discount value | percentage or amount | percentage or fixed amount, fixed amount per item or once per cart line |
| How quantities are counted | eligible items added together | each cart line on its own, per product, or everything in scope together |
| Slots used for three tiers (of 25 active automatic discounts) | 3 | 1 |
| Text in the cart | discount title | set per tier, empty shows the title |
Without an app: one discount per tier
You can rebuild tiered pricing with Shopify's built-in tools. That holds up as long as there are few tiers and you maintain the discounts carefully.
- One automatic discount per tier. Discount A gives 10% off 5 or more items, discount B gives 15% off 10 or more, both on the same products. If the two aren't allowed to combine, Shopify's help center says it applies the discount that gives the customer's cart the bigger advantage. So at 10 items, B wins.
- Every tier takes a slot. Shopify allows at most 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included. Three product groups with three tiers each already use nine slots.
- Every tier needs its own upkeep. Active dates, customer eligibility, markets and combinations are set in each discount separately. Extend the promotion and forget one tier, and it silently drops out.
- Combinations get tricky. You set combinations per discount class, not per individual discount. If you allow your tiers to combine with other product discounts, that permission also applies between the tiers themselves. What actually reaches checkout is something a test order will show you.
- B2B volume pricing is a different tool. Since April 2026, volume pricing for company customers is also available on Basic, Grow and Advanced. It applies in the B2B catalog as a fixed unit price per variant, though, not as a percentage tier for every visitor.
- Good enough if: you have one or two tiers on one product group, all eligible items should count together, and few other discounts run alongside.
How to set up Volume tiers in Hand-E Discounts
All tiers live in one discount. The thresholds are strictly ascending: each one sits above the previous one.
- In Hand-E Discounts, open the discount types and choose Volume tiers.
- Set the scope: all products, collections, individual products or individual variants. You can mix them, for example one collection plus two individual products.
- Choose how quantities are counted: each cart line on its own, all variants of a product together, or everything in scope together.
- Enter the tiers, for example 5% off from 3 items, 10% from 5 items, 15% from 10 items. If you like, each tier gets its own text for the cart.
- In the cart preview, build a test cart with real products. It uses the same logic as the checkout and shows for each line whether the tier applies or how many items are still missing.
- Save, then use Shopify's Combinations card to decide which other discounts the tiers can apply alongside.
Worked example: coffee beans at $24.95 with three tiers
Tiers: 5% from 3 items, 10% from 5 items, 15% from 10 items. Counting: everything in scope together. The tier reached applies to every counted item, not just the extra ones. Shopify calculates the percentage per item and rounds down to the cent.
| Quantity | Tier | Discount per item | Total discount | Customer pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 items | none | $0.00 | $0.00 | $49.90 |
| 3 items | 5% | $1.24 | $3.72 | $71.13 |
| 5 items | 10% | $2.49 | $12.45 | $112.30 |
| 10 items | 15% | $3.74 | $37.40 | $212.10 |
Limits and pitfalls
- With the counting option everything in scope together, tiers can be percentages, not fixed amounts.
- Volume tiers is an automatic app discount and takes one of the 25 slots for active automatic discounts. Shopify also allows at most 25 active discount functions per store.
- Whether the tiers apply alongside other discounts is up to you on Shopify's Combinations card. The preview doesn't know about other discounts in your store.
- The preview also knows nothing about active dates, customer eligibility, markets, taxes or shipping. That's why a test order before going live is worth it.
- The tiers are open-ended at the top: a customer buying 40 items gets the same 15% as one buying 10. If you want to give more from 40 items, you need a fourth tier.
- If you uninstall the app, Shopify removes the discounts that came from it.
