B2B volume pricing or quantity discount: what fits your store?

Shopify's B2B volume pricing gives business customers fixed unit prices above a quantity, counted per variant, and according to the changelog it runs on Basic, Grow and Advanced since April 2026. Volume tiers from Hand-E Discounts work in percentages or fixed amounts for shoppers in your online store and can count variants together.

Two tools with similar names

People who search for price breaks often mean two different things. One is a wholesale price: a cafe that orders as a business customer pays $21.90 instead of $24.95 from 10 packs on. The other is a quantity discount in the regular store: whoever buys 6 packs saves 10%.

For the wholesale price, Shopify has a tool of its own. In B2B catalogs you set quantity rules (minimum, maximum, increment) and volume pricing, up to 10 price breaks per product, which apply to each variant. According to the Shopify changelog of April 2, 2026, volume pricing, company profiles, payment terms and up to three active B2B catalogs are now available on Basic, Grow and Advanced too. Unlimited catalogs and assigning catalogs directly to companies and locations stay reserved for Shopify Plus.

For a quantity discount in the store you need a discount. The difference sits in the detail: fixed prices or percentages, per variant or across variants, for business customers alone or for shoppers in your online store.

Native: B2B catalogs with volume pricing

If you sell to business customers, Shopify's B2B features are the fitting route. They are built for it, and according to Shopify they cost nothing extra on Basic, Grow and Advanced.

  • Company profiles and catalogs: Business customers get a catalog with prices of their own. On Basic, Grow and Advanced, up to three active catalogs are possible, assigned through markets.
  • Volume pricing: up to 10 price breaks per product, which apply to each variant. The customer has to reach the quantity for each variant separately.
  • Fixed price: Once a product has volume pricing, its price is fixed. An overall percentage adjustment on the catalog then stops applying, according to the help.
  • Quantity rules: minimum, maximum and increment, for example in cases of 6.
  • Enough when: your price breaks are meant for business customers alone and fixed unit prices per variant suit your catalog.
  • Where it does not fit: customers without a company assignment do not get the prices of the B2B catalog, and variants do not count together towards a price break.

Volume tiers for shoppers in Hand-E Discounts

If shoppers in your online store should save above a quantity, create Volume tiers. They stand next to your B2B catalog and do not replace it.

  1. Create Volume tiers in Hand-E Discounts.
  2. Choose the scope, for example the Coffee collection.
  3. Choose the counting mode all variants of a product together so that whole bean and ground count together.
  4. Enter the tiers as percentages, for example 10% off from 6 packs.
  5. Check the cart in the preview and set on Shopify's Combinations card which discounts the tiers may apply alongside.
  6. Test with a B2B test customer what happens in a business customer's checkout before the catalog and the tiers run at the same time.

Worked example: variants counted apart or together

Coffee at $24.95 per pack in two variants, whole bean and ground. In the B2B catalog a pack costs $24.95 as well, and from 10 packs a volume price of $21.90 applies. For shoppers, Hand-E Discounts gives 10% off from 6 packs, counted with all variants of a product together. 10% of $24.95 is $2.495, truncated $2.49.

What to watch out for

  • How an app discount and B2B catalog prices work together in a business customer's checkout is something you test with a test customer before both run at the same time.
  • Volume prices are fixed prices. If you change your list price, you adjust the breaks in the catalog yourself.
  • More than three active B2B catalogs and assigning catalogs directly to companies and locations need Shopify Plus.
  • Under the counting mode everything in scope together, Volume tiers have percentage tiers and no fixed amount.
  • Volume tiers take up one of the 25 slots for active automatic discounts.
