Shopify Scripts are shut down: how discounts run now
Since June 30, 2026, Shopify no longer runs Scripts, and Scripts that were still published have been deactivated. Discounts that a line item script used to calculate run through Shopify Functions today, for example out of a public app that stores on every plan are allowed to use.
What fell away with the shutdown
Shopify Scripts existed on Shopify Plus alone. Line item scripts acted on the items in the cart and could change prices and grant discounts, for example for volume tiers, bundle discounts or free items.
Shopify phased them out in two steps. From April 15, 2026, Scripts could no longer be edited or published again, and since June 30, 2026, they do not run at all. A store that did not migrate has not granted its old script discounts since that date.
The successor is called Shopify Functions. Functions come from apps. Public apps from the Shopify App Store that contain functions may be used by stores on every plan. Custom apps with their own functions are, according to Shopify, allowed for stores on Shopify Plus.
| Shopify native | With Hand-E Discounts | |
|---|---|---|
| Volume discount with several tiers | one automatic discount per tier | Volume tiers |
| Tiered discount by order value | one automatic discount per tier | Cart value tiers |
| Bundle discount across several parts | Shopify Bundles as a product of its own, or Buy X get Y | Bundle |
| Free item above a cart value | Buy X get Y, the customer puts the item in the cart | Gift above cart value |
| Payment and shipping scripts | separate function types for payments and delivery | not part of this app |
Replacing natively: what Shopify offers itself
Not every script needs an app. Check what Shopify's own discounts and features cover before you look further.
- Scripts customizations report: Shopify provided a report you could use to check which script customizations can be replaced by functions or public apps.
- Simple discounts: percentage or fixed amount discounts with a minimum purchase requirement, Buy X get Y and free shipping exist as regular Shopify discounts.
- Tiers: A tier structure can be rebuilt as several automatic discounts. Each tier takes up one of the at most 25 active automatic discounts.
- Wholesale prices: If you calculated B2B prices with Scripts, Shopify's B2B catalogs offer volume pricing per variant, since April 2026 on Basic, Grow and Advanced as well.
- Checkout Blocks: Stores on Shopify Plus can create custom discounts with Checkout Blocks.
- Your own function: Plus stores can have a custom app with its own function developed. That is development work, and it needs maintenance later too.
How to move discount scripts over to Hand-E Discounts
Take each old script by itself and translate its rule into a discount type. One rule becomes one discount.
- For every script, write down in one sentence what it did, for example: 10% off from 5 pairs, 15% off from 10 pairs on the Socks collection.
- Match that sentence to a discount type: Volume tiers, Cart value tiers, Bundle, Gift above cart value or Bulk codes.
- Check how your script counted quantities and pick the matching counting mode in Volume tiers: each cart line on its own, all variants of a product together, or everything in scope together.
- Rebuild the rule, and for Volume tiers and Bundle recalculate a typical cart in the cart preview.
- Compare the result with an old order from the time when the script was running. Differences of a few cents can come from rounding.
- Set the combinations. Discount functions run side by side and know nothing about each other. Which discounts apply together is decided by Shopify through the combination settings.
Example: a tiered script as Volume tiers
The old script gave 10% off from 5 pairs and 15% off from 10 pairs on the Socks collection, counted across the whole collection. In Hand-E Discounts that is Volume tiers with the Socks collection as scope and the counting mode everything in scope together. One pair costs $19.99.
| Cart | Tier | Discount per pair | Total discount | To pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 pairs, $79.96 | none | $0.00 | $0.00 | $79.96 |
| 6 pairs, $119.94 | 10% | $1.99 | $11.94 | $108.00 |
| 12 pairs, $239.88 | 15% | $2.99 | $35.88 | $204.00 |
What can go wrong during the switch
- Hand-E Discounts does not replace payment and shipping scripts. Shopify has separate function types for those.
- Per store, at most 25 discount functions are active. If you split many scripts into many separate discounts, keep an eye on that number.
- Where several rules used to run one after another inside one script, the combination settings now decide what applies together. Recalculate carts in which two rules apply at the same time.
- The cart preview knows nothing about other discounts, schedules, customer groups, markets, taxes or shipping. A test purchase belongs before the launch.
- If you uninstall the app, Shopify removes its discounts. Plan the switch so that you do not change apps in the middle of a promotion.

Multiple quantity breaks don't fit in one discount
In Shopify's discount form you pick one minimum purchase requirement with one value, which means one threshold per discount. For 10% off 5 or more items and 15% off 10 or more, you need two separate automatic discounts natively, or an app that keeps every tier in one discount.

Shopify Bundles creates a bundle as its own product, and Buy X get Y knows one condition and one discounted group. Hand-E Discounts discounts your regular products as soon as every group of a bundle is filled in the cart, with a separate discount per group.

Shopify's B2B volume pricing gives business customers fixed unit prices above a quantity, counted per variant, and according to the changelog it runs on Basic, Grow and Advanced since April 2026. Volume tiers from Hand-E Discounts work in percentages or fixed amounts for shoppers in your online store and can count variants together.
