Hide payment methods in Shopify, reorder and rename them
Shopify offers every shopper every payment method you've activated, in the same order. Cash on delivery for the first-time buyer abroad, pay by invoice on the $3,000 order. With rules you decide who sees what. Here's what Shopify does on its own, what works without Shopify Plus, and where every rule stops.

1 Why not every shopper should see every method
Every payment method costs you something different, and some carry a risk. With cash on delivery (COD) or an invoice you ship before you're paid. If the parcel comes back unpaid, you've paid for shipping for nothing.
And some combinations simply don't fit: COD to another country, pay by invoice for a gift card that gets redeemed right away, or PayPal for business customers who pay by bank transfer on net terms.
At the same time, every method you hide is one a shopper might have wanted. So hide on purpose, for the shoppers and carts where the method causes trouble, and leave it for everyone else.
2 What Shopify does without an app
Under Settings > Payments you turn payment providers and manual payment methods on or off. Whatever is on, everyone sees: according to Shopify, customers can pay with any method you've activated there. A method of your own, such as "Pay by invoice" or cash on delivery, is a manual payment method. The order stays unpaid until you mark it as paid.
Business customers have their own route. With Shopify B2B a company gets payment terms such as net 30, on every plan from Basic up according to Shopify's Help Center.
A rule like "no COD for first-time buyers" isn't built in. That's what payment customizations are for. You manage them under Settings > Payments once a matching app from the App Store is installed, and Shopify says the Basic plan is enough. Writing your own function as a custom app, on the other hand, requires Shopify Plus.
If you used payment scripts on Plus: Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. The guide on replacing Shopify Scripts covers the discount side; payment rules now need a function too.
3 Rules by cart, country and product
A rule has an "If" and a "Then". Under "If" you add one or more conditions, joined with "and" or "or". Under "Then" you say which method disappears, gets renamed or changes place. Typical cases:
Rules by customer work too: previous orders, spend so far, customer tags. How to use them for offering pay by invoice only to repeat customers has a guide of its own.

- Cart value: hide PayPal when the cart value is at least $1,000. The app uses the sum of the items, without shipping and taxes.
- Shipping countries: hide cash on delivery when the shipping country is CA or MX. Without a shipping address yet, for digital products for example, the rule hides when in doubt.
- Product in cart has tag: hide the invoice option as soon as one item carries the tag "custom-made". Personalized goods are hard to resell if nobody pays.
- Product in cart from collection: hide COD and invoice as soon as a gift card is in the cart.
- Number of items and Time of day: for example hide COD from eleven items up, or hide a method during set hours. All payment rules share one time window.
4 Rename: say what the method means
The name is often the only thing a shopper reads about a payment method. "Invoice" doesn't say when to pay. "Pay by invoice, due in 30 days" does. A rename can depend on a condition too, for example only for orders above a cart value.
Two limits: methods with a logo, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, can't be renamed, according to Shopify. And a new name doesn't change a price. If you write "COD (+$5)", that's what checkout shows, but the $5 never lands on the order.
5 Reorder: put the cheapest method first
What's on top is what shoppers see first. If one method costs you less in fees than another, move it up. Or put the method first that's common in a given country.
In the app you choose "Move payment method" and put the rows in the order you want, with the arrow keys or by dragging. Each row finds a method by its name, for example "Name contains PayPal". According to Shopify, wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay can be hidden, but not moved.
A tip on names: use a part that only occurs once. "Pay" would match PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay at the same time. The default "contains" has an upside: a rule on "Invoice" keeps working if you later rename the method to "Pay by invoice".
6 Where rules don't apply
Payment rules run at checkout. A few paths go around them or are limited, and Shopify sets most of these, not the app:
Express buttons on the product page are a special case. With a branded button, according to Shopify, the shopper pays with that method directly, and Shopify lists these accelerated paths as only "partially supported" for payment customizations. If a method must never appear, hide the express buttons on the product page in your theme and test the path yourself. Shopify does warn that fewer express options can lower conversion.

- Checkout only: not on the cart page and not in Point of Sale.
- Shop Pay: rules don't apply there, with one exception, the gift card field.
- US and Canada: without Plus, payment customizations only cover methods other than credit cards.
- Draft orders: not while you create one in the admin, but in the draft order's checkout.
- Up to 25 active payment rules: the app stores them together in one customization and checks them together.
- The last method stays: if your rules together would hide them all, the app hides nothing there.
