What is Shopify Payments, and what does it cost?
Shopify Payments is the payment provider built into Shopify. It turns on cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, and in the US it handles PayPal too. What a payment costs depends on your plan. And on payments through another provider, Shopify adds a fee of its own. Here are the US numbers as of October 2026.

1 What Shopify Payments is and who can use it
Shopify Payments is Shopify's own payment provider. Under the hood it runs on Stripe, as Stripe says on its Shopify customer page. For you that means no separate contract with a payment processor, no setup or monthly fees according to Shopify, and payments that show up right in your Shopify admin.
In the US, payouts usually arrive 3 to 5 business days after a payment is captured, according to Shopify. Payments captured Friday through Sunday are combined into one payout, and there's no minimum payout amount.
Shopify Payments is available in about 40 countries and regions. In the US, these are the requirements:
- Location: a business address in one of the 50 states or Puerto Rico. Sole proprietors must live in the US. Other US territories aren't supported.
- Bank account: a full checking account with a US bank, in USD, that can receive ACH transfers. Savings accounts don't work.
- Identity: an EIN, or an SSN or ITIN if you sell as an individual. Shopify also verifies the people on file, and whoever sets up the account must be at least 18.
- Business type: some businesses are excluded, according to Shopify for example firearms, prescription drugs, gambling, adult content and counterfeits. The full list is in the Shopify Payments terms of service.
2 Which payment methods run through Shopify Payments
In the US, Shopify Payments turns on Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Diners Club right away, along with the accelerated checkouts Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.
PayPal works differently in the US than elsewhere. PayPal Express Checkout isn't available to US merchants. Instead, PayPal Wallet runs inside Shopify Payments: you get it automatically when you set up Shopify Payments, and PayPal payments arrive in the same payouts as your card payments.
Local payment methods for shoppers abroad, such as iDEAL | Wero for the Netherlands or Bancontact for Belgium, you turn on yourself. Shopify shows them based on where the shopper is, not where your store is. iDEAL | Wero needs at least 100 orders processed through Shopify Payments first.
3 Fees per plan in the US
Shopify charges a percentage plus a fixed amount per payment, and both go down as your plan goes up. Business cards and American Express cost more, international cards add 1%, and PayPal Wallet starts at 3.49% + 49¢. If a shopper pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify charges a 1.5% conversion fee in the US.
Then there's the plan itself: Basic is $39 a month or $29 a month billed yearly, Grow $105 or $79, Advanced $399 or $299, and Plus starts at $2,300 a month.
Rates change. Check the pricing page before you decide; it shows the rates for your store's country. These were the US rates in October 2026:
| Plan | Standard cards online | Business cards and Amex | Third-party provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2.9% + 30¢ | 3.5% + 30¢ | 2% |
| Grow | 2.7% + 30¢ | 3.3% + 30¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | 2.5% + 30¢ | 3.1% + 30¢ | 0.6% |
| Plus | in your Plus quote | in your Plus quote | 0.2% |
4 Without Shopify Payments: the third-party transaction fee
If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify charges a transaction fee on each payment through it: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That comes on top of the provider's own fees.
Manual payment methods such as bank transfer, cash on delivery or an invoice you send yourself are exempt, according to Shopify, and so are Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and Shop Pay Installments. There's one catch: on stores created on or after May 12, 2025, the fee also applies to the part of an order paid with a gift card or store credit, even with Shopify Payments. More in the guide to Shopify gift cards.
You can run both side by side. Your third-party provider then stays in charge of cards, and Shopify Payments handles Shop Pay, methods your provider doesn't offer, and failed card payments it retries. Those payments cost the standard Shopify Payments rate plus 1.25%, according to Shopify.
A third-party provider makes sense if your business type or location isn't eligible for Shopify Payments, or if you need a payment method it doesn't offer. Factor the transaction fee into that decision.
5 Show, reorder and rename payment methods with rules
Shopify Payments decides what a payment costs. Rules for who sees which method, for example by cart value or customer, aren't built into Shopify. The guide to hiding, reordering and renaming payment methods covers it in detail. Typical rules:

- Hide: show your own invoice option only to customers who have ordered before, as in net terms for repeat customers.
- Reorder: put the method that costs you least near the top, for example only for carts above a set value.
- Rename: give a manual method a clear name, such as "Bank transfer, ships once paid".
