How to hide shipping methods in Shopify, rename and reorder them
Shopify offers every shopper every shipping rate that applies to their order. That includes express for the oversized item that can't travel overnight, and the free rate you only meant for returning customers. Shipping profiles handle a lot on their own. Here's where they stop, what a checkout rule adds, and which limits Shopify sets.

1 Why not every shipping method fits every order
Shipping helps decide whether people buy. One in five shoppers who abandoned a purchase told Baymard that delivery was too slow. Removing your fast option altogether costs you buyers.
Still, not every rate fits every order. Express for an oversized item that a freight carrier delivers. A rate that promises "delivered tomorrow" that nobody can keep once your shipping cutoff has passed. Or a free rate you only want to give to returning customers.
So hide on purpose: for the carts and customers where a rate doesn't fit. Everyone else still sees it.
2 What Shopify does without an app
You set up shipping rates under Settings > Shipping and delivery, per shipping zone. A rate is flat, depends on order value or weight, or is calculated by the carrier. According to Shopify, each customer is offered only the rates that apply to their order, and the cheapest one is selected by default.
You name your own rates yourself, and that name is what checkout shows. For free shipping above an order value, you add a rate with a condition on order value and leave the price empty or enter 0.
Products with special needs get shipping profiles; Shopify's own example is oversized items. A profile has its own rates, such as Standard without Express, and you can create up to 99 custom profiles. When a cart holds items from several profiles, Shopify adds up rates with the same name. If the names differ, Shopify adds up only the cheapest and shows them as a single rate.
You turn on pickup in store per location. According to Shopify, it only appears by default when the entire order is in stock at that location. You can exclude collections, but not individual products.
A rate by customer or by time of day isn't something Shopify offers. That's what delivery customizations are for. You manage them under Settings > Shipping and delivery once a matching app from the App Store is installed, and Shopify says the Basic plan is enough. Writing your own function as a custom app, on the other hand, requires Shopify Plus.
Some stores already see "shipping options by market" instead of shipping profiles; Shopify describes it as early access for certain stores. And if you controlled shipping with Shopify Scripts on Plus: Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. The guide on replacing Shopify Scripts covers discounts; shipping logic now needs a function as well.
| Case | In Shopify | With a rule |
|---|---|---|
| Different rates per country | Shipping zones | not needed |
| Free shipping above an order value | Rate with a condition on order value | not needed |
| No express for oversized items | Separate shipping profile | Hide Express as soon as one item has the tag |
| Free shipping only for returning customers | No matching rate type | Hide the rate for new customers |
| "Delivered tomorrow" only until 2 pm | No matching rate type | Rename Express during that window |
3 Rules by product, customer and time of day
A rule has an "If" and a "Then". Under "If" you add one or more conditions, joined with "and" or "or". Under "Then" you say which shipping method disappears, gets renamed or changes place. Typical cases:

- Product in cart has tag: hide Express as soon as one item carries the tag "oversized". A single item is enough, so mixed carts are covered too. Your other rates keep their names.
- Product in cart from collection: the same for a whole collection, for example all furniture.
- Customer's previous orders: hide a rate called "Free shipping for returning customers" when the customer has at most 0 orders. Only logged-in customers are recognized; every guest counts as new.
- Time of day: rename "Express" to "Express, delivered tomorrow" from 00:00 to 14:00. Your store's local time applies, and all shipping rules share one time window.
- Cart value: hide the method without tracking when the cart value is at least $100. The app uses the sum of the items, without shipping and taxes.
- Shipping countries: your shipping zones already decide which rates exist in a country. The condition helps in combination with a second one, for example hide Express to Canada when an oversized item is in the cart.
4 Rename: say when the parcel arrives
The name is often the only thing a shopper reads about a shipping method. "Standard" doesn't say how long it takes. "Standard, 2 to 4 business days" does. You name your own rates in Shopify. You need a rule when the name should depend on a condition, such as the shipping country or the time of day.
Shopify sets two limits. For a carrier's rates, Shopify automatically puts the carrier name in front of the new name, for example "UPS", and no app can remove it. And a new name doesn't change a price: if you write "Express (+$3)", that's what checkout shows, but the $3 never lands on the order.
When in doubt, the app doesn't rename. If a condition can't be decided yet, the name you set in Shopify stays.
5 Reorder: first place belongs to the cheapest method
Shopify selects the cheapest rate by default, and for apps that's a rule: according to Shopify, an app that reorders shipping methods must not preselect a more expensive one. The cheapest always has to be selected first.
In the app you choose "Move shipping method" and put the rows in the order you want, with the arrow keys or by dragging. Each row finds a method by its name, for example "Name contains Express". If a more expensive method sits in the first row, the app puts it in second place, right below the cheapest. It never moves the cheapest out of first place.
So reordering is for everything below: for example Standard with tracking right below Economy, and Express last.
A tip on names: use a part that only occurs once. "Shipping" would match every rate with that word in its name. The default "contains" has an upside: a rule on "Express" keeps working if you later rename the rate to "Express, 1 business day".
6 Where rules don't apply
Shipping rules run at checkout. Shopify sets some limits, the app sets a few more:

- Checkout only: not on the cart page.
- Draft orders: not while you create one in the admin, but in the draft order's checkout.
- Up to 25 active shipping rules: the app stores them together in one delivery customization and checks them together.
- No zip codes: from the shipping address the app reads only the country. Rules by zip code or region aren't possible.
- No weight, no date: for weight, Shopify has weight-based rates. There's no condition by calendar date, so you switch a seasonal rule on and off yourself.
- The last method stays: if your rules together would hide every shipping method of a delivery, the app hides none there.
