Discount calculator: work out the sale price
What does an item cost at 15% off? How many percent is $5 off? And how big is the discount in a reduced price? The calculator answers all three. It works out percentage discounts per unit and rounds down to the cent, the way Shopify's checkout does.
As in your store, for example 49.90
Result
- Price after discount
- $42.42
- You save
- $7.48
Rounded down like Shopify's checkout: 15% of this price is exactly $7.485. Shopify takes off $7.48 per unit.
How the calculator works
A discount is a reduction of the price, as a percentage or as a fixed amount. Everything is calculated in whole cents, and percentage discounts the way Shopify's checkout does it.
- Price after discount: price minus discount. 15% of $49.90 is $7.485 on paper. Shopify cuts it to the cent per unit and takes off $7.48, so the item costs $42.42.
- Percent off between two prices: original price minus sale price, divided by the original price. From $49.90 to $39.90 is $10.00 less, so 20.04% off.
- Fixed amount: $5 off $49.90 is 10.02%. The calculator rounds the percentage to two decimals, never the amount.
- Two discounts in a row don't add up: 10% and then another 10% on $100 leaves $81, which is 19% off, not 20%.
- Nothing leaves your browser. The calculator runs entirely on this page. Your numbers are neither stored nor sent anywhere.
Creating the discount in Shopify
You create a percentage or fixed amount discount in Shopify under Discounts, as a code or automatic discount. Each discount has one minimum quantity or one minimum purchase amount. Several tiers like “10% off 3 or more, 15% off 5 or more” need a separate discount per tier without an app. What each tier costs and brings in is what the tiered discount calculator shows.
With Hand-E AI Discounts all tiers sit in one discount, and you create it from one sentence. The cart preview in the app calculates exactly like this calculator. A widget shows the discount on the product page.

Multiple quantity breaks don't fit in one discount
In Shopify's discount form, you set one minimum purchase requirement with one value. So each discount has one threshold. For 10% off 5 or more items and 15% off 10 or more, you need two separate automatic discounts. Or you use an app that keeps every tier in one discount.

Whether it is an automatic discount or a discount code, check two things first: the discount's own conditions and Shopify's rules for how discounts work together. These are combinations, minimum purchase requirements, customer eligibility, active dates and the limit of 25 active automatic discounts. Go through the points in order, then check the result with a test order.

Shopify puts every discount into a class: product, order or shipping. Two discounts only apply together when each one allows the other's class. Shopify then applies product discounts first, order discounts next and shipping last. When they are not allowed to combine, the better one wins.
