Shopify discount combinations explained
Shopify puts every discount into a class: product, order or shipping. Two discounts only apply together when each one allows the other's class. Shopify then applies product discounts first, order discounts next and shipping last. When they are not allowed to combine, the better one wins.
Every discount has a class, and both sides have to agree
Shopify sorts discounts into three classes. A product discount applies to specific items or collections, an order discount to the cart subtotal, a shipping discount to the shipping cost. In each discount you choose on the Combinations card which classes it may apply together with.
Discounts do not combine by themselves. Two discounts only apply together when the setting on each of them allows it. If just one of them allows the other, that is not enough. This holds for automatic discounts and discount codes alike.
When two discounts are not allowed to apply together, Shopify applies the one that brings the larger benefit for the cart. The other one is not broken then, it just loses. What else can stop a discount is covered in the checklist for discounts that do not apply at checkout.
Two combinations depend on the store itself: product with order discounts and order with order discounts only work when the checkout uses no checkout.liquid customizations and the Licensify app is not in use. If these options are missing on the card, check those two points first.
| Combination | Possible | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Product discount + product discount on different items | yes | all stores |
| Product discount + product discount on the same item | yes | Shopify Plus only, with tags on both discounts |
| Product discount + order discount | yes | no checkout.liquid, no Licensify app |
| Order discount + order discount | yes | no checkout.liquid, no Licensify app |
| Product or order discount + free shipping | yes | all stores |
| Shipping discount + shipping discount | no | one shipping discount per order at most |
Without an app: set combinations in the Shopify admin
Combinations are a feature of Shopify itself. You need no app for them with Shopify's own discounts, and discounts from apps use the same card.
- Setting it: In the admin, open the discount under Discounts, pick the classes it may apply together with on the Combinations card, and save. Then do the same for the second discount.
- Overview: In the discount list, the Combinations column shows which classes each discount combines with. A filter shows only the discounts that combine with a given class.
- Order of application: Product discounts apply first, to individual items. Order discounts then apply to the subtotal that is left. Shipping discounts come last.
- Several order discounts: Two percentage order discounts are both calculated on the same subtotal after product discounts. 10% and 20% on $100 add up to $30 off. When a percentage and a fixed amount order discount meet, Shopify takes off the percentage first.
- Minimum purchase amount: For an order discount with a minimum purchase amount, two totals have to reach the threshold: the total before product discounts and the subtotal after them. Other order discounts do not lower this total. Shipping and taxes do not count.
- Limits: at most 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included, and per order at most five product or order discount codes plus one shipping discount code.
- Sales channels: Discounts combine in the online store, through the Storefront API and in Shopify POS. Checkouts on Facebook, Instagram or Google have no combinations.
- Enough when: you know which discounts should apply together and allow it on both sides. Combining itself needs no app.
How to combine discounts from Hand-E AI Discounts
The app calculates the discounts, Shopify decides on the combinations. The app sets no combination on its own. A discount from the app therefore only applies together with others once you allow it on Shopify's card.
- Create the discounts, for example Volume tiers and Cart value tiers. Volume tiers, Bundle discount and Gift above cart value are product discounts, Cart value tiers is an order discount.
- Open both in the Shopify admin under Discounts. On the Combinations card, allow order discounts on the Volume tiers and product discounts on the Cart value tiers.
- If free shipping should apply too, also allow shipping discounts on both, and product and order discounts on the shipping discount.
- Plan the thresholds of the Cart value tiers with the amount that is left after the Volume tiers. Shopify checks each threshold after product discounts, just like for its own order discount with a minimum purchase amount.
- Place a test order just above and just below each threshold, once with and once without discounted items in the cart.
Worked example: one product discount, two order discounts, free shipping
The cart holds a jacket at $120, a hat at $40 and a scarf at $60, $220 in total. Active are 20% off jackets as a product discount, 10% off from $200 and 5% off from $150 as order discounts, and free shipping. All four are allowed to combine with each other.
| Step | Calculation | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| Cart | $120 + $40 + $60 | $220.00 |
| Product discount 20% on the jacket | $120 × 20% = $24.00 | $196.00 |
| Order discount 10% from $200 | does not apply: $196 after the product discount is below $200 | $196.00 |
| Order discount 5% from $150 | $196 × 5% = $9.80 | $186.20 |
| Free shipping | comes last, the subtotal stays | $186.20 |
What to watch out for
- When you create a new discount, also check the combinations of the existing ones. Allowing it on the new discount alone is not enough.
- Without Shopify Plus, an item gets at most one product discount. If Volume tiers and a Bundle both apply to the same item, the better one wins. An order discount can still be added.
- Without Shopify Plus, items in a Buy X get Y discount get no further product discount. Shopify then applies the better overall offer. An order discount can apply alongside it when the store meets the requirements.
- When a shipping discount and a product or order discount are not allowed to combine, the product or order discount takes priority. Shopify calculates the shipping options from the discounted cart value.
- A discount added to an order by hand, for example in a POS cart or on a draft order, always applies, regardless of the combination settings.
- Some apps build a single discount with several classes, such as 10% off the order plus free shipping. Such a discount only combines with discounts that allow all of its classes. Discounts from Hand-E AI Discounts have exactly one class each.
- The Cart value tiers of Hand-E AI Discounts also check their thresholds after product discounts. Measured in our demo store on 2026-10-08: $104 before and $89.90 after Volume tiers and Bundle gave the 5% from $60 tier, not 10% from $100.

The discount is set up but does not apply at checkout
Whether it is an automatic discount or a discount code, check two things first: the discount's own conditions and Shopify's rules for how discounts work together. These are combinations, minimum purchase requirements, customer eligibility, active dates and the limit of 25 active automatic discounts. Go through the points in order, then check the result with a test order.
Read moreAn order value discount needs several tiers
Shopify gives an order discount one minimum purchase amount, so one tier. Natively, you build each tier as its own automatic discount, and Shopify applies the one that saves the customer more. Or you set up one Cart value tiers discount in Hand-E AI Discounts.

In Shopify's discount form, you set one minimum purchase requirement with one value. So each discount has one threshold. For 10% off 5 or more items and 15% off 10 or more, you need two separate automatic discounts. Or you use an app that keeps every tier in one discount.
