How the codes are made

The generator follows the same rules as the Bulk codes discount type in Hand-E AI Discounts.

31 characters, no look-alikes. The random part uses capital letters and digits without 0 and O, without 1, I and L. Anyone typing a code from a printed card or reading it out on the phone won't mix them up.
Real randomness from your browser. The codes come from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, not from a formula. One code on a flyer doesn't give away the others.
Every code only once. Duplicates are thrown out and drawn again. With 8 characters there are about 852 billion possible random parts.
One prefix per campaign. ANNA for an influencer, EXPO for coupon cards, HELLO for the newsletter: later you can tell from any code which campaign it came from.
Nothing is sent anywhere. The list is created on this page. We never see your codes, and unless you download them, they are gone when you close the page.

Getting the codes into your store

A list isn't a discount yet. A code only works at checkout once it is attached to a discount in Shopify.

One by one in the admin: In the discount form you enter a code or let a button generate one. Fine for a handful of codes.
Through the Admin API: The mutation discountRedeemCodeBulkAdd attaches up to 250 codes per call to a discount. That is a route for developers, and the list from this page fits right in.
With Hand-E AI Discounts: The Bulk codes discount type creates up to 1,000 codes per campaign directly as a Shopify discount, on every plan. Its CSV file only contains codes Shopify actually created.

Common questions

Can I import the CSV file straight into Shopify?

Not through the discount form in the admin, where you enter codes one at a time. For a whole list, the route is the Admin API with up to 250 codes per call, or an app that creates the codes in Shopify itself.

How long should the random part of a discount code be?

8 characters is a good middle ground: short enough to type, and with about 852 billion possibilities practically impossible to guess. 6 characters are enough for small campaigns, 10 or 12 for codes worth a lot.

Are the generated codes stored anywhere?

No. They are created in your browser and stay there. We never see them, and unless you download them, they are gone when you close the page.

Can the prefix contain spaces or special characters?

Spaces and special characters other than hyphen and underscore are removed, because Shopify advises against special characters in codes: links with a discount code may not work reliably otherwise. German umlauts are spelled out, so Ü becomes UE.
